A rug fails at its edges first. The fringe is the end of the foundation, and once a few knots there work loose, the rows behind them start to unravel a little further with every vacuum pass and every footstep.
What begins as a half-inch of loose fringe becomes an inch of missing pile, then a hole that needs reweaving. The same is true of a frayed side cord: left open, it lets the whole edge peel back. Catch it early and it is a quick overcast; leave it a year and it is a rebuild.

Worn and thinning fringe is the single most common repair that comes off a Greenacres pickup — years of foot traffic and vacuuming take the ends first. We can secure what is left or rebuild the fringe entirely, matched to the rug.
What we do at the bench
We secure loosening fringe before it takes the pile with it, or rebuild worn ends entirely — new fringe matched to the rug so the repair reads as part of it, not a patch.
The side cords take the daily abuse. When they fray, we re-wrap and overcast the edge by hand with matched yarn, closing it back up before the body of the rug starts to open.
Holes from wear, burns or old damage are rewoven knot by knot on a matched foundation, keeping the pattern and pile height continuous across the mend.
Moths feed on wool and love the quiet underside of a rug. We clear the infestation, then reweave the grazed and eaten areas so the pattern runs unbroken again.
A rug kept damp — a spot that never fully dried, a corner against a humid wall — can rot from the back. We cut out the failed foundation and rebuild the sound structure around it.
A rug can be shortened or narrowed to fit a room without looking cut, and a tired antique can be brought back over a full restoration. We tell you honestly what the piece will take.
Simple habits, longer life
Rotate it a couple of times a year so one path doesn’t wear through while the rest stays new — the sun that pours into a Greenacres room fades and weakens one stripe of a rug if it never moves.
Use a proper pad; it stops the rug sliding on tile and takes the grinding that would otherwise fall on the foundation. Vacuum with the beater bar off near the fringe, and deal with spills by blotting, never rubbing. And keep the rug dry — a damp corner from a spill or a leak is where dry rot and mildew begin.
A wash every couple of years clears the buried grit that quietly saws at the fibers. Most repairs we do could have waited longer, or been avoided, with a little of this.
